is a wonderful resource. I was able to smoke a 12 lb turkey for Thanksgiving and have one rack entirely unused. In short, my WSM works well, can be moved easily, is durable, easy to use, has a great user community and has great capacity for someone who entertains occasionally, but primarily cooks for family. That was a risk I was not willing to take.
That has not happened. My biggest fear was that I would regret purchasing the 18 instead of the 22. I had been seriously considering the Big Green Egg as well. The benefit of the egg over the Weber is it is hyper insulated by comparison, which means I would use less charcoal.
If you google "Big Green Egg flashover" you can see videos of it happening. I could have fit a significantly larger bird. The reason I went with the Weber was not just expense. The BGE is big, heavy, and well made. I did a lot of homework before purchasing this product.
Charcoal simply isn't that expensive. There was one other thing that I found disturbing about the BGE, and that was it's tendency to perform something called a "flashover". It is a flash of fire that results when you open the egg and air rushes in. I could just see my son lifting the lid on the egg and having flames rush out into his face. I already own a Weber gas grill which is over 10 years old and still performing perfectly. The two racks in the 18 are more than adequate for my needs. I've made a number of meals on the Weber Smokey Mountain, and all have turned out well.
The Weber is small, light and well made. The BGE duplicates a number of the functions of my gas Weber, so when it got down to, I really didn't need to spend the extra cash on the egg. The website [.]. I am quite happy with my purchase.
For worry-free smoking from chicken to baby-back ribs, this is the way to go. Based on my experiences with my own Smokey Mountain Cooker, I purchased this for my stepson. As for purchase experience, Amazon's price is very competitive but it is not cheap to ship, understandable due to its size and weight. This is an outstanding charcoal smoker and provides excellent results each and every time, no matter what meat you smoke. It is well designed and made; superior to its close competitor-more in price, but you definitely get what you pay for. Shipping/delivery was within a few days. Product ships in manufacturer's box, and was received undamaged.
I bought this for my Dad who had been hinting about getting into smoking food again. Back in the 70's he built a smoker out of an old refridgerator and smoked fish in it. Anyway, he and I have been huge Weber fans and the look on his eyes when he opened this at Christmas was awesome. It's too cold to smoke food now but he plans on it in Spring and we both know everything will taste great.
I've had mine since 2005 and it still looks and works like the day I bought it. It holds it's temperature very well and does a terrific job. You have never tasted a brisket until you smoke one using the 'Minion method w/ Oven finishing' as described at the site linked below. And don't overlook the fact that it is made so that it can be used as a charcoal grill to boot. for mine, even at this price I can't recommend it enough.I Do highly recommend that you visit this site for many tips, modifications and recipes aimed at using this particular smoker. Plenty of room to do two tukeys', briskets or whatever you like. If you want to smoke with charcoal instead of via electric this is the smoker for you. You will want to add a temperature gauge or stick one in the top opening, but this is very inexpensive and easy to do.
I see they now have a 22 1/2" version available as well. So if you did need more room, there you go.Very efficient, burns a long time on full load of charcoal (maybe 8 lbs) I can smoke a brisket for 12-14 hrs using the 'Minion meathod' and might have to add a handful of brickets towards the end. (I always use Apple wood myself) My friends are always bothering me to do another one for any party they might be having. While I only paid $[.]. Is is a wonderful resource.[.].
Been enjoying it ever since. Great product. Got this about four months ago and done many smokes since. I gotta say, like many products you buy these dayz that aren't worth what you pay; this Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker is everything and much more. Maintains the heat well and consistent. It did take a couple of smokes to get there but now, it's smooth sailing. Also, there's a website that's Totally dedicated to this smoker. check it out.
